A Superhero 4th Birthday - Dessert Table

A Superhero 4th Birthday

I was so excited to throw Evan a superhero 4th birthday party! He’s really into Avengers right now, and I knew it would be fun. In the end, the birthday boy got sick and we had to scale back to a family-only get together, but he enjoyed himself anyway.

He didn’t get sick until the night before the party, so I already had all the food made and party supplies on hand.

A Superhero 4th Birthday - Dessert Table

The cake turned out wonderful. I’m not big on cake decorating, though I would love to learn, so I just did a simple job of frosting it and added sprinkles on top. I did a combination of dark chocolate for the cake and white chocolate for the icing. I used this recipe from The Redheaded Baker for the cake, and this recipe for the icing.

I’ve used both recipes in the past, and will certainly use them again. The one thing I did different this time was that I used dark chocolate cocoa powder in the cake, which had an enhanced flavor with the coffee added into the recipe.

For the cupcakes, I used a box mix for red velvet and topped with the white chocolate icing I had left over from the cake. I made hulk pudding cups with crumbled Oreos and brownie bits on top. I also made “Iron Man” Jello, which consisted of strawberry Jello with mango Jello layered on top.

I didn’t really follow a recipe for the trifle, so I’m happy it turned out well. I layered, from the bottom up, brownies, vanilla pudding, sliced bananas, strawberry pie filling, red velvet cupcake crumbles and whipped topping. I then sprinkled red sugar on top. My inspiration was that I wanted something to match Iron Man’s colors, as that’s Evan’s favorite superhero (most of the time).

A Superhero 4th Bithday - Sugar Cookies

Every holiday or special occasion, I bake sugar cookies. I use an old family recipe that creates wonderful soft cookies. I did modify the recipe for use with these fun superhero cookie cutters, by cutting the baking powder down, but the cookies were still just as great.

A Superhero 4th Birthday - POPcorn

I saw these cute POP cups and thought of using them for popcorn. There are also popcorn boxes in the superhero theme, but I preferred the cups really.

Despite the circumstances, I’m really happy with how the birthday party turned out. I wish Evan had been feeling better so as to enjoy the superhero theme more, but he seemed much better while in the midst of the birthday excitement.
