Over the years, I have tried a lot of different cloth diapers and combinations for my boys. Early on we made a move to mostly natural fibers, and at some point along the way, I ditched all of the remaining microfiber. I thought I had found the perfect systems for me. Then I got the opportunity to review Geffen Baby’s universal diaper inserts, and boy, have I been missing out!
About Geffen Baby
“We began as Los Angeles-based textile manufacturing company that saw a need for natural baby products. We manufacture the textiles we use ourselves at our own plant in our own backyard to ensure that we have a hand in on every step of production from start to finish.”
Geffen Baby offers a whole line of natural baby products. They offer various inserts, along with prefolds, flats, wipes, and more!
Downfall: I was a little overwhelmed when I looked on their website because they offer a lot! I felt the “shop” category could have been better organized, and it would be nice if the product descriptions had a little bit more information.
Let’s start with what I have been using for cloth diapering recently.
I have a variety of diapers, and I do things in a very specific way for each brand. I have Applecheeks, and I use the Applecheeks bamboo in them (usually 2-ply). My BumGenius pockets get stuffed with Grovia prefolds, and my Rumparooz and other pockets get stuffed with 2 bamboo inserts each.
First Impression of the Geffen Baby Universal Diaper Inserts
The Super Absorbers are made with hemp and organic cotton. When I first opened the package, I felt just how soft they are! Oliver crashed my photo shoot of the inserts and came to the same conclusion. I would not hesitate to put these directly against a baby’s skin.
When they first arrived, I noticed that they were really big! However, natural fibers do shrink as you prep them, and once they had been prepped, they fit in the pocket diapers perfectly. I did wonder how they would perform for us. The inserts we received are regular absorbency level, and Oliver is almost 2.
Before I got a chance to test the inserts in daytime diapers, my husband used one overnight in addition to our fitted/cover setup. Usually, in the morning when we go to change him, you can feel dampness just outside of the covers elastics, because he is so soaked. However, with the Geffen, the diaper didn’t get to such an over-saturated point, and it actually didn’t add much (if any) bulk (to our already bulky nighttime solution)!
After that test, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to start out by trying one insert in a pocket, or go straight to two. Keep in mind, we currently stuff pockets with either TWO bamboo inserts, or a prefold. I decided to try out one insert alone, just in case it worked.
And I was so surprised when it DID work. We only need ONE Geffen Baby Super Absorbers Universal Diaper Insert in a daytime diaper!
This cuts down on bulk for us, and simplifies the stuffing process.
Things I Love About The Super Absorber Universal Insert
These inserts are handmade in the USA with natural fibers. While being super soft and trim, these inserts can handle a lot! I don’t measure my son’s output, but Geffen Baby claims these can hold 4-6 oz of liquid, while the newborn hold 2-4 oz and the plus hold 6-9 oz! That is a lot of liquid.
